As the 50th anniversary celebration of Barrett-Jackson roared into mid-week action, eager bidders and automotive enthusiasts filled the auction arena to watch the parade of muscle cars, custom Resto-Mods, one-of-a-kind creations and future collector cars. Bidding increased as the day progressed, the first vehicles to reach the $100,000 mark were sold, and auction records were set.
The “Mirthmobile,” one of the most iconic movie vehicles of the 1990s, returned to the Barrett-Jackson auction block on Wednesday and shattered the world record that it set at the 2016 Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas Auction. A fan favorite from the moment gates opened for the 2022 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction, the 1976 AMC Pacer (Lot #515) rose to cinematic fame in the hit 1992 comedy “Wayne’s World.”
The Baby Blue three-door hatchback with flame decals and roof-mounted licorice dispenser played not only a pivotal role in the film — ferrying Wayne, Garth and their buddies around town as they perform a memorable lip-synced rendition of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” — but also in the vehicle’s history, resurrecting the Pacer from relative obscurity. It sold for $71,500.
Some of the day’s other highlights included Lot #465.1, 1969 Dodge Charger – $117,700; Lot #496, 1966 Pontiac GTO – $110,000; Lot #534, 1984 Chevrolet K5 Blazer custom SUV – $106,700; and Lot #471, 1974 Ford Bronco Custom SUV – $103,400.
World-class collections continued across the block today, including a select offering from a private collection as well as vehicles from the Chevrolet Collection, the Bruce R. Lieberman Auto Collection, the Bryan Frank Collection, and the Mile-High and Flying Marlin collections.
Two vehicles from the Chevrolet Collection pushed the competition forward when the 2020 Camaro LT1 convertible VIN 001 (Lot #421.1) and the 2020 Corvette Stingray 1LT (Lot #421.2) sold for $90,200 and $108,900, respectively.
The 70-car strong Mile-High Collection, which debuted on the block Tuesday, presented an eclectic array of vehicles, including the aforementioned Mirthmobile; Lot #487, 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am – $110,000; Lot #484, 1969 Oldsmobile 442 coupe – $100,100; and Lot #481.1, 1965 Ford Mustang Convertible – $77,000.
Barrett-Jackson auctions attract the best and brightest of the automotive world, and today Barrett-Jackson Chairman and CEO Craig Jackson was able to catch up with longtime friend and former racing driver Arie Luyendyk as well as Formula 3 driver Derek Daly and CART driver Paul Tracy. Arie, a two-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 and member of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame and Motorsports Hall of Fame of America, has been part of the Barrett-Jackson family since 1989, and it was great to have him here to help celebrate 50 Years of The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions.
Enjoy our gallery of today’s highlights, and join us tomorrow as the first three of 10 charity cars will cross the block, with 100% of the hammer price benefiting a selection of deserving philanthropic organizations.
