We’ve mentioned the facelift for the Lamborghini Urus a while ago in our article about a test mule being captured with heavy camouflage, but one that clearly showed a different styling for the front and rear, we even did several virtual renders on how the updated Urus might look without all those black on white swirls covering it. But it took several more months before new spy shots appeared of the upcoming Urus version, and this time it’s just satin black, there doesn’t seem to be any camouflage to cover the new styling.
And this is where things get interesting if we take a closer look at these new photos, at first glance, this looks more like a more powerful version of the Lamborghini Urus than a simple mid-life facelift, or might this be the long-awaited Urus Ibrido version? Only time will tell, we’ll have to wait until Automobili Lamborghini SpA decides to make an official introduction with complete details.
But let’s go over some of the details we can see on these latest spy shots, with the most obvious change being the front bumper, it seems this soon to be released Urus comes with a different design for the front bumper, and those ‘floating’ side fins remind me of the front styling of the Lamborghini Sián to be honest.
There doesn’t seem to be any changes on the headlights, nor the lower section of the bumper if we look closely at these photos, but the air intakes below the headlights have a new design and might be a bit larger than the earlier one, but the biggest difference are those large, vertical intake on the outer corners.
Some sources state the side sills are different too, but comparing these with photos of the current Lamborghini Urus doesn’t really show any clear difference, so either I’m missing something here, or this new version uses the same lower section, it does seem that the exterior rearview mirrors are styled differently, more aerodynamic, but that could be the lighting on these photos combined with the satin black shade, so I’m not too sure on that for the moment.
The choice of wheels on this black Lamborghini Urus test mule might look like an odd choice, but most likely these could be an option on the new Urus to be released later this year, what I did notice is the fact we’re still looking at a five-bolt mounting method, while center-lock wheels are all the rage these days, it just wouldn’t make too much sense fitting that on an SUV, even a Super SUV like the Lamborghini Urus.
But let’s go back to the front for a minute before we take a second look from a rear angle, take a closer look at the engine cover on this test mule, those are some large air vents on either side, which seems a bit odd to me for being just a mid-life facelift model. Think about this one for a second, we already have larger intakes on the bumper, even additional intake on the sides, and on top of that we now have air vents on the engine cover too … so does the new Lamborghini Urus model need more fresh air and airflow compared to the current model?
Another difference between the Urus on sale today and this black test mule can be found at the rear, more specifically the section behind the rear wheels, which is part of the rear bumper, there are different vents fitted, and again they come in a ‘floating’ design as seen at the front, so it seems the upcoming Urus model focusses more on airflow around the car than before.
Looking at more details at the rear unveils the lower diffuser seems to be left alone, on this test mule it seems Lamborghini fitted the at this time optional Akrapovic exhaust while the roofline rear wing on top of the hatch seems similar to the current model, and once again the taillights are the same too, apparently, both headlights and taillights will be taken from the current model.
But the section below the rear hatch is different, there are grilles fitted now while the current Urus has smooth bodywork there, if these grilles are functional, or just for looks isn’t clear from these photos, but they seem to be there for styling only.
So what are we looking at here? Is this the MY2022 Lamborghini Urus EVO update, or is there something else going on, is this an additional model, might it be the long-awaited hybrid version Lamborghini has been rumored to release ever since the Urus got introduced four years ago. It is about time to create the mid-life facelift model for the Lamborghini Urus, but to be honest, these photos make me think we are looking at a more powerful version of the current model.
With all those additional airflow intakes and vents added, it seems this version of the Lamborghini Urus needs more fresh air, is this because they’ve pushed the twin-turbo V8 engine to deliver more power? Some sources state this might be the hybrid version, but would adding electric motors to the V8 require air vents on the engine cover and additional vents at the rear? Seems unlikely no?
From what I can see on these photos it doesn’t seem the seats are any different from the current model, we might be seeing a modified dashboard or central console on the facelift model, but chances are the interior won’t change too much other than some larger displays perhaps, but just imagine if you could opt for a set of lightweight sport seats when you opt for the four-seat layout, wouldn’t that be interesting?
We will probably see an official press release on this Lamborghini Urus later this year, I for one hope we’re looking at a more powerful Urus, and Urus S or something like that …
