When Audi first launched the rear-wheel drive R8, the car enthusiast community rejoiced. Not only was Audi finally building its first rear-wheel drive car but it was a mid-engine supercar with a naturally-aspirated V10. Cars like that don’t really exist anymore, so it was cause for celebration. While it lacked the power of the R8 V10 Performance Quattro model, fans understood, as the rear-drive model naturally couldn’t handle as much power. Apparently, Audi now feels it can handle more power and released this — the Audi R8 V10 Performance RWD.
The new Audi R8 V10 Performance RWD is still less powerful than the Quattro version but it’s more powerful than before. Its 5.2 liter naturally-aspirated V10 engine now makes 570 PS (562 horsepower) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque.
This new Performance variant will replace the standard car in the Germany, though there’s currently no word on whether it will come to the U.S. market. (I’ve reached out to Audi USA to find out, will update as I get more info)
Audi didn’t just add some more power and call it a day, though. Bucket seats, Dynamic Steering, new CFK stabilizers, and ceramic brakes help it handle a bit better than the standard model as well. It also now gets Ascari Blue Metallic as an optional paint color, something previously only available on the R8 V10 Performance Quattro.
Like all R8s, the Audi R8 V10 Performance RWD will be built at the Böllinger Höfe plant in Neckarsulm, Germany and will be largely hand-assembled. It’s the same production facility that builds the Audi R8 LMS GT4 race car and the cars share 60 percent of their parts.
Orders for the R8 V10 Performance RWD start October 21 in Germany, with prices for the Coupe starting at €149,000. If you want some al fresco driving, the Spyder version will start at €162,000.
