Every car enthusiast knows who Ken Block is. The famed rally racer is most known for his jaw-dropping Gymkhana videos, in which he drives incredibly powerful cars through city streets in clouds of tire smoke. Now, he’s taking his talents to his first automotive love — Audi. More interestingly, though, he’s partner with Audi for future electric projects.
Audi was the brand that got Block into motorsports to begin with, back when the original Audi Sport Quattro S1 dominated Pikes Peak. Now, he’s working with Audi on undisclosed electric projects, which is a bit of a new frontier for the American rally racer. However, it’s one he seems excited to get into.
“Electric mobility is the future”, said Block. “I see the electric car as a leap forward for us as a society in order to create something that can not only reduce emissions and hopefully make the planet a better place. But not only that: it’s also about performance. I love anything that makes me go faster. Electric cars can do that. And as far as sound goes, I have kids who don’t care about that. They think that the sound of electric cars is just as cool as the sound of internal combustion engines.”
During his first visit to Audi HQ in Ingolstadt, Block had the chance to drive some of his childhood idols, as well as some new and exciting cars; the Audi Sport Quattro S1, the Audi V8 Quattro from ’90s DTM, and the futuristic Audi e-tron Vision Gran Turismo.
Block was also impressed with Audi’s latest performance EV. “The Audi RS e-tron GT really surprised me,” said Block. “The design is exquisite with great attention to detail and a perfect finish. The driving experience is amazing: the car is incredibly fast and handles very well. The center of gravity is very low so you can change direction quickly.”
While this partnership with Audi will be Block’s biggest exploration into electrification, it’s not his first experience with electric motorsport. Block actually finished third in the 2020 Dakar Rally Race in an electric prototype and won the inaugural “Projekt E” electric rally cross race in Sweden.
Audi is thrilled to have someone like Ken Block working with them. Not only does he have a ton of motorsport expertise to share but he’s also a huge name that will bring a ton of attention to the brand. An endorsement from Block for Audi’s electric performance vehicles will go a long way.
