Can the Audi Q4 e-tron Take on its Rivals?

The current EV market is an interesting one. At the moment, the selection of new EVs is plentiful but they don’t always play in the same segments, despite often being priced similarly. For example, one electric sedan might have similar range, power, and pricing as an electric crossover, thus sort of making them unlikely competitors. Such is the case with the Audi Q4 e-tron, as its specs put it squarely in contention with other smaller EV sedans and hatchbacks.

While the Audi Q4 e-tron is a small crossover, Car Magazine decided to put it up against two sedans and one hatchback, to see which was best at around the same price point. The other cars in question were the Tesla Model 3, Polestar 2, and Hyundai Ioniq 5.

In this four-way contest, the Audi Q4 e-tron had its work cut out for it. Not only were all three of its other competitors excellent in their own right, they were all more fun to drive. The Q4 is what it is —  a good looking, comfortable, practical, and efficient EV. What it is not is a fun, engaging driver’s car. Admittedly, some of that is VW Group badge-engineering, as the Q4 e-tron is too mechanically similar to the very dull Volkswagen ID.4, but some of it is intentional. Audi wants the Q4 e-tron to attract Q5 buyers, and Q5 buyers like cars that are comfy, practical, and spacious. So it might not be fair to judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, so to speak.

Either way, the Audi Q4 e-tron placed last in this test, with all three competitors being deemed more fun to drive. One such competitor that Audi could really learn a thing or two from is the Hyundai Ioniq 5. Not only is that stylish and interesting looking, as is the Q4, but it also has an engaging drive to go along with its comfort and practicality. It both has its cake and eats it, too.

I won’t spoil the results for you because this comparison is worth a read but it seems that Audi still has some work cut out for it if it wants to be the industry-leader in EVs.
