VIDEO: Is the Audi A5 Coupe Style over Substance?

The Audi RS5 Coupe is getting a bit of attention lately, as it’s being compared to the newly released BMW M4. However, one car that isn’t getting a lot of attention is the standard Audi A5 Coupe and potentially for good reason. On the outside, it’s a good looking car but, underneath that handsome sheet metal, is there enough substance to justify buying one?

In this new video from Rory Reid, we get to see whether or not the facelifted Audi A5 Coupe is about style over substance and, unfortunately, that seems to be the case.

On the outside, the Audi A5 is a great looking car, one that will have your neighbors peaking over their rose bushes in envy. It’s low, long, sleek, and muscular looking, with crisp lines and defined rear haunches. In the segment, the A5 Coupe might be the best looking car on sale.

However, one you start to drive it, there isn’t much else there. Its steering is a bit too slow and numb, its grip isn’t very impressive, and its chassis doesn’t feel very playful. Admittedly, the car Reid tests in this video is a front-wheel drive car, so that could be part of why it’s so dull to drive. But it’s not as if a driven rear axle is going to drastically change the personality of the car.

In the Audi A5 Sportback, its safe, smooth, and predictable driving dynamics are appreciated because they compliment its four-door nature. So it becomes a stylish family sedan. However, the Coupe’s backseat lacks the space to be practical in the real world. Typically, coupe’s make up for that lack of practicality by having superior driving dynamics but the A5 Coupe doesn’t, thus making it more of a fashion statement than a sports car.

So, if you really want an Audi A5, get the Sportback. If you want a Coupe, maybe get something else.
