Gooding & Company has postponed its live Amelia Island, Florida, collector car auction until 2022, a decision that comes after the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance changes its dates from March until May.
In lieu of the northwest Florida sale, Gooding will conduct a virtual auction on its Geared Online platform, running from May 3 through 7, 2021. Gooding has conducted live Amelia Island auctions in conjunction with the concours and other events annually since 2010. The new date for the Amelia concours in May 23.
The schedule changes were prompted by concerns about the coronavirus pandemic, which has caused wholesale changes and cancellations of events for the past year. The Amelia Island concours, auction and other events were among the last automotive gatherings held in 2020 before the pandemic lockdowns.
Gooding has invested most of its auction activity in boutique Geared Online sales since the COVID-19 restrictions have taken effect, most recently replacing its annual onsite Scottsdale auction with online bidding, which resulted in total sales of $7 million. The company also held its UK sale, which kicked-off last year as a live event, as a virtual sale on Geared Online. Results for the British auction were $8 million.
Gooding also is about to launch its third and final auction of motorsport mementos from the personal collection of the late champion driver Phil Hill, with the next round of bidding taking place March 15-26. The first two auction had 100 percent sales and totals of more than $1 million each.
