Pick of the Day: 2007 BMW Z4 M coupe, a rare performance standout

Over the years, BMW has built some of the more-amazing performance cars to come from Germany, often giving Porsche a run for its money.  The cars from BMW also tend to offer convenience options that we don’t see in the cars from Stuttgart until a few years later.

In addition, while the top-performance Porsche road cars tend to escalate in value quite quickly, cars such as BMW’s M-series tend to be available for more-reasonable sums of money.

The Pick of the day is one of those cars, a 2007 BMW Z4 M coupe.

The Z4 M coupe is a rare car with only 1,815 built by BMW for North America from 2006 until the end of production in 2008, which is less-than half the production of the Z4 M roadster.

The Addison, Illinois, dealer offering this M coupe on ClassicCars.com describes it as an 81,000-mile example with options that include adaptive xenon headlights, heated front seats and heated exterior mirrors. The BMW is finished in its original Interlagos Blue metallic paint with a Light Sepang Bronze Nappa leather interior and aluminum trim.

These Z4 M coupes offer appealing fastback styling combined with a level of exclusivity and performance that is difficult to beat for the price. The engine is the final evolution of the BMW S54 3,246cc inline-6 that started out in the US-spec E46 M3 cars. It puts out a strong 330 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque at 4,900 rpm.

The car can cover 0-60 in 4.6 seconds, the quarter mile in 13.8 seconds and with an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

Combine that with the unbelievable chassis dynamics of a BMW model and you have a serious performance car. The only gearbox offered is happily a 6-speed manual.

A few years ago, these stunning fastback BMWs were almost forgotten and you could buy one for around $20,000. It seems that since then the world has woken up and “discovered” these rare and capable BMW M cars and prices have been on the rise, and few offered for sale.

This Z4 M coupe is offered for what I would call a fair price of $29,990. The prices are not likely to drop anytime soon as super-low-mileage examples are now quietly trading between $60,000 and $75,000.

This is a perfect example of an up-and-coming classic that you can still buy for a reasonable price, and you would do well to buy one sooner than later.
