The BMW 2002, often referred to as the first sports sedan, is the model that made BMW the sporting brand that it is in the U.S. In fact, there is a great book on the 2002 written by Jackie Jouret titled Icon, which explains the importance of this model to everything that came afterwards for BMW. I recommend it.
These were landmark European cars, and they were well-built, incredibly fun to drive, successful on the racetrack and affordable. They embodied a new kind of sporting German car that could hold four people and was at home driving your kids to school as it was on the track.
Over the past few years, the 2002 has crept up in value, with top-performance 2002 tii examples selling for north of $40,000.
The Pick of the Day is a 1976 BMW 2002, produced near the end of 2002 production and finished in Malaga (burgundy) over a black vinyl interior. The car is in good driver level condition and features a tii engine, 4-speed manual gearbox, dual Weber carburetors, power disc brakes and new paint and bodywork, according to the Denver dealer advertising the 2002 on ClassicCars.com.
The BMW has a few small stone chips in the paint and a small crack in one of the turn indicator lenses, the dealer notes. This car is fitted with period Recaro seats in matching black vinyl and wears later-model BMW 3-Series alloy wheels.
The many photographs with the ad show that the BMW could be a good candidate for bringing up to the next level of condition. One positive move would be to remove the ugly impact bumper from the rear (the bumper up front has been removed already) and replace it with a trim one from an earlier 2002.
These ‘icons’ of BMW history seem to have moved to a price point where they are likely to stay at for a while, and this car being offered for $17,900 is very much in line with current prices.
While it is not likely to increase dramatically in price, there little risk that it will depreciate any time soon. In a nutshell, this is a 2002 to drive and enjoy on tours, Sunday drives and local shows.
