This new Audi A3 Sportback is one of the more high-tech, premium hatchbacks on the market. But it’s not alone in offering great tech, a premium interior and impressive driving dynamics in the segment. If fact, it has a few really good competitors. So Mat Watson from Carwow put them all together to see which is best.
In this four-way comparison, we see the Audi A3 take on the BMW 1 Series, Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Volkswagen Golf. While the new Mk8 Golf is quite a bit cheaper than the rest of the cars in the test, it can actually hold its own while offering better value (and it’s built on the same chassis as the A3), so it’s an interesting alternative to the other cars.
However, while the A3 and Golf are built on the same chassis, the A3 is noticeably nicer on the inside and is nicer to drive. Its sport suspension is not only sportier and tauter on the road than the Golf but it’s also just as comfortable, so Audi has done a really good job, there.
Though, the BMW 1 Series is the sportiest of the bunch. Everything from its seating position to its driving dynamics are the best in the segment for driving quickly. Having said that, it’s also the least comfortable, has the most road noise and the most boring cabin. So there’s a trade-off.
In the end, though, Mat Watson gave the win to the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, simply because it was the best combination of things. Its interior is the best looking, its blend of comfort and driving dynamics is the best, its practicality is impressive and its tech is fantastic. So if you want the best all-around hatchback in the segment, Watson claims it to be the A-Class.
We haven’t driven any of these cars because none of them are available in the US market. However, we’ve driven the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, which is the same car as the 1 Series and we’re going to drive the A3 Sedan. Hopefully we can get the A-Class sedan in for a test as well and maybe we can replicate this test on our own, to see how the sedans fare.
