SPIED: Audi Q5 Sportback Seen Testing at the ‘Ring

Audi just recently gave the Q5 a facelift, which updated its headlights, grille and some interior bits, among other things. Now, though, it’s about to get an entirely new model variant and it’s just been caught doing some camouflaged testing at the Nurburgring — the Audi Q5 Sportback. (We don’t own these spy photos but you can see them here)

In these photos, we see the Audi Q5 Sportback in heavy camouflage but it’s not hard to imagine what the final product is going to look like. Just imagine an Audi Q5 but with a more aggressive roofline and less rear headroom. So, essentially, imagine a Q5 that’s worse…

Audi Q5 Facelift

What’s interesting is that this Q5 Sportback seems to be the least Sportback-like of all of Audi’s Sportbacks. Its roofline doesn’t even seem that much different than the standard car’s, so we’re not really seeing the reason to buy one over the regular Q5, which has more rear headroom and potentially more cargo space. Also, the standard cars are typically cheaper, as you have to pay extra for Sportback’s “style” and less space.

Mechanically, the Audi Q5 Sportback will be identical to the standard Q5. So expect the same exact line of powertrains and drivetrains. In the ‘States, that will be the entry-level 2.0 liter turbo-four, the turbo-four/hybrid and the SQ5’s 3.0 liter turbo-six. That’s not a bad lineup of powertrains, though, and it does bring a new hybrid to Audi’s lineup, which is always a good thing. In Europe, just add a few diesel engines to the lineup and you’ll get the picture.

Inside, expect the same cabin as the newly-facelifted Q5. So it will get the same new MMI Touch Response system and Virtual Cockpit. That will make it one of the most high-tech crossovers in the segment.

We’re hoping that maybe Audi makes some tweaks to its driving dynamics, though. It’s not likely but it’d be nice to see a version of the Q5 that’s actually fun to drive because the current Q5, while nice enough, is just a bit too boring.
