2020 Audi e-tron Sportback Earns IIHS Top Safety Pick+

Electric cars have a distinct advantage when it comes to safety. Without the hassle of having to work around an engine, transmission, driveshafts, differentials, oil pans, radiators, hoses and gas tanks, to name just a few components, automakers can make EVs incredibly safe. Packaging crumple zones and impact zones becomes far easier in an EV. Which is partly why the 2020 Audi e-tron Sportback was just named an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and was the safest 2020 vehicle in the “Large SUV” category.

Throughout every IIHS test, the Audi e-tron Sportback received top marks. In fact, in every single test, the sportier looking e-tron received the absolute highest grade it could. Not only were the crash dummies at a low risk of injury in every crash test but all of Audi’s autonomous safety features were rated highly, too.

To be honest, none of this is actually surprising. Most EVs do very well in crash testing and Audi’s safety tech is among the best in the business. Plus, the Audi e-tron Sportback is virtually the exact same car as the standard e-tron, which also received top marks from the IIHS. So there’s really no surprise here.

Having said that, it is encouraging to see. That sort of safety rating might encourage traditional Audi customers, such as Q7 or Q8 customers, to switch to one of the e-trons when their current lease is up. If parents see that either e-tron offers superior safety ratings, even if they’re only slightly superior, those ratings might be the deal-breaker that gets them to make the switch from gas to electric.

Honestly, it’s a hard sell to get traditional customers to switch to electric mobility. The idea of having to charge, overcoming range anxiety and learning miles per kWh, rather than miles per gallon, can be a bit nerve-wracking for new customers. Knowing that their car is as safe as it gets, though, might help.
